200,000 coffee acres by 2030, agriculture ministry projects

The Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation hopes to increase coffee acreage to 200,000 and export 60,000 tonnes by 2030.
The country needs to lay down concrete policies to boost coffee production, experts say. Additionally, establishing of public-private partnerships, gaining access to long-term loan plans, and cooperation with foreign and local organisations are absolute musts for enhancing of Myanmar’s coffee sector, officials said.
Myanmar’s coffee has become precious crop among Myanmar agricultural products. A tonne of Myanmar’s coffee fetches over Ks3milllion.
Ywangan coffee is officially recognised by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA). Currently, there are about 50,000 acres of coffee farms, producing about 7,000 tonnes.
Myanmar’s Arabica coffee is exported to Switzerland, China (Taipei), China, Thailand, America, South Korea, Japan, Germany, etc. High-quality coffee exported to America fetched about US$7,000 per tonne, whereas the export price of fair quality coffee to China (Taipei) is about US$3,800 per tonne.
Concerted efforts have been exerted for Ywangan coffee to attain Geographical Indication (GI) as proof of its Ywangan origin since 2015, it is learnt. —Htet Myat
