Workers demolishing one of many huts built by squatters on a State owned project site near the Yangon-Mandalay Highway.
Authorities demolished about 400 huts occupied by squatters in outskirts of Yangon yesterday and the remaining huts will be cleared next days, according to official source.
There are more than 16,000 huts flanking the Yangon-Mandalay Highway in Hlegu Township.
“The area occupied by squatters is the site chosen for a project of the State. This is the second time that the area is occupied by the squatters,” said U Yu Khaing, Director of the Department of Human Settlement and Housing Development. The authorities has also urged the squatters to sue those who sell the plots to them illegally.
There were a few people living in the huts and most of the huts were built for selling others, a squatter said.
Four men and one woman were detained yesterday in the operation for disturbing an express bus and attacking a police.
