State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi returned to Yangon yesterday after concluding her visits to Canada and Sweden.
She was welcomed at the Yangon International Airport by Yangon Region Chief Minister U Phyo Min Thein, Ambassador of Canada to Myanmar Mrs. Karen Mac Arthur, Consular Officer of the Swedish Embassy in Yangon Ms. Ann Constance Stodberg and other officials. On 6 June, the State Counsellor attended a workshop of experts from Canada regarding the effects of the federal system on social policies and economic development, relations between governmental organisations in a federal system, and the role of the judiciary as practiced by Canada arranged by the Forum of Federations in Ottawa, Canada.
On 7 June, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi met with Canadian Prime Minister Mr. Justin Trudeau and discussed opportunities to expand their bilateral relations, including efforts to improve Myanmar’s governance, the well-being of women and children and economic development, including implementation of agricultural technologies.
In the meeting, Canada pledged US$8.8 million in humanitarian assistance and for stability and peace-making efforts.
State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi accepted the Olof Palme International Prize 2005 in Sweden on 12 June.
At the meeting with Swedish Prime Minister Mr Stefan Lofven, she discussed matters relating to improving bilateral relations, continued assistance from Sweden on overcoming the challenges faced by Myanmar during the transition period, the national reconciliation and peace process in Myanmar, stability and development of Rakhine State, increasing cooperation under a new strategic framework set up by Sweden for Myanmar’s development, exchanging high tech know-how and creating markets in the agriculture sector, and cooperation in the trade, education and transport sectors. — Myanmar News Agency
