An Irrawaddy dolphin found dead on Ayeyawady bank

The dolphin was thought to have died of old age and was found three days after its assumed death on 19 June.

The dead body of an Irrawaddy dolphin was found on the bank of the Ayeyawady river on 21 June, according to an official of Madaya Township’s Department of Fishery.
“We received information that one Irrawaddy dolphin was found dead near the Thonesepe village in Madaya Township in Mandalay Region. The cause of the death may be due to old age and it is assumed to have died on 19 June” said an official from the township’s Department of Fishery.
“No injuries were found on the body of the dolphin, but a fish was found in his stomach when we cut it open. Officials of Madaya Township Department of Fishery, officials of Irrawaddy dolphin conservation and officials of Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Myanmar programme assumed that the died of old age” said U Thant Zin, an official of Irrawaddy dolphin conservation from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS).
The dead Irrawaddy dolphin is male, 6ft 3 inches long and 41 inches wide with the tail measuring 21 inches. The officials assumed that the dolphin may have been nearly 30 years old.
The dead body of the dolphin was studied together by officials of Madaya Township Department of Fishery, officials of Irrawaddy dolphin conservation and officials of Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) and local residents.
