MYANMAR exported more than 1,000 tonnes of onions to neighbouring China and Thailand through cross-border points within a week’s time, according to a recent report of the Commerce Ministry.
The ministry’s statistics show that the country sent a total of 1,145 tonnes of onion amounting to US$0.496 million to China from Muse 105-mile trade zone and over 100 tonnes of onion worth over $45,000 to Thailand from Myawady and Tachilek border gates in the third week of last month.
The current export figures for onions from those border trade stations were 762 tonnes more than that of previous week. The country sold nearly 500 tonnes of the same crop to the two neighbours in the second week of this June.
Local growers in Minbu Township in Magway Region say that onion prices increased from Ks800 to Ks1,200 per viss, a unit equivalent to 3.6 pounds or 1.6 kilograms, within a month, adding that the prices are expected to decline when fresh onion crops enter into the domestic market.
