Myanmar, India celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi attended a ceremony  yesterday evening in the Park Royal Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw celebrating 70 years of Myanmar-India diplomatic relations and the 70th anniversary of India’s Independence Day.
She expressed congratulations on behalf of Myanmar for India’s longstanding independence and commended India on achieving democracy in the face of difficulties and that “unity can be wielded out of a glorious diversity of races, religions and languages.”
She said cooperation between India and Myanmar has resulted in the formation of a Joint Consultative Commission, a Joint Trade Committee, and national-level meetings. India has also supported Myanmar in capacity building, the democratic
transition and other development efforts.
The event was also attended by Union Election Commission Chairman U Hla Thein, Union Ministers U Kyaw Tint Swe, Dr Pe Myint, U Ohn Win, U Win Khaing, Dr. Myint Htwe, National Security Advisor U Thaung Tun, Joint Chief of Staff (army, navy, air) General Mya Tun Oo, Lt-Gen Tun Tun Naung of Tatmadaw Commander-in-Chief Office, Nay Pyi Taw Command commander Maj-Gen Myint Maw, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin, Deputy Minister U Kyaw Myo, India Ambassador to Myanmar H.E. Mr. Vikram Misri, Hluttaw representatives, invited guests and officials.
The ceremony was opened by the playing of the national anthems of Myanmar and India, after which the India Ambassador to Myanmar H.E. Mr. Vikram Misri gave an opening speech. The State Counsellor then spoke about the 70 years of Myanmar-India diplomatic relations and 70th anniversary of the Independence Day of India.
The State Counsellor and event attendees then took a commemorative group photo, after which dinner was served.—Myanmar News Agency
