UNESCO officials met yesterday with Myanmar Ministry of Religious Affairs and Culture officials at the National Museum in Nay Pyi Taw about potential measures they can take to protect Myanmar’s historical and cultural artifacts from degradation and theft.
UNESCO’s convention against the illicit trafficking of cultural objects encourages governments to catalogue and track antiquities and cultural artifacts.
At the meeting, Thura U Aung Ko, Union Minister for Religious Affairs and Culture addressed, said that Myanmar has joined UNESCO anti-trafficking conventions since the 1970s. The minister also described efforts taken by the government to identify and preserve Myanmar’s heritage through the protection of historical artifacts.
During the discussion, Mr Etienne Clement, an international law expert discussed anti-trafficking legal frameworks recommended by UNESCO.
Officials with the Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Legal Affairs and Special Cases Assessment Commission, the Office of the Union Attorney General, Myanmar’s Police Force and Customs Department also participated in the discussion.—Myanmar News Agency
