The opening ceremony for the Mandalay district community centre co-sponsored by the Information and Public Relations Department and the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation, under the supervision of the Ministry of Information, was held yesterday at the district IPRD in Pyigyitagon township, Mandalay Region.
Present at the ceremony were Dr. Pe Myint, Union Minister for Information, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, Chief Minister of the Mandalay Region Cabinet and ministers of Mandalay Region Cabinet, U Maung Pe, director-general of IPRD and staff, departmental heads at the regional level, towns-elders, Dr Thant Thaw Kaung, central executive committee member of the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation and responsible officials, civil societies and donors.
At the opening ceremony, Dr. Pe Myint, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, U Maung Pe, Dr. Thant Thaw Kaung and writer Maung Thit Lwin (Thit Lwin—Ludu) cut a ribbon draped across the community centre signboard and sprayed it with fragrance.
In the second part of the ceremony, Dr. Pe Myint spoke of the importance of the media.
“Radios, televisions and newspapers are performing the tasks of the Ministry of Information — education and information. It is aimed at upgrading the offices of IPRD into a Community Centre by transforming into the locations for people to meet for discussions of regional development matters, for youths to get technical knowledge, for bibliophiles to hold literary talks, for children to read in these children’s libraries for their knowledge bank and for those from the aged group to take rest and recreation. Only if all the people join in building up a democratic nation will a perfect democratic country emerge. Success of these Community Centres depends upon active participation of responsible personnel and use of readers. Presently opened community centres need to be regarded as owned by the public.”
Afterward, Dr. Zaw Myint Maung and Dr. Thant Thaw Kaung made speeches, with U Maung Pe presenting certificates of honour to donors.
The Union Minister and party then inspected the mini-museum, the reading room for children, the library, the hall for computer training and the meeting room in the community centre.
