A ceremony marking the 71st Anniversary of the United Nations was held at Yangon University’s Hall of Arts this afternoon. Present were officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, rector and faculty members of Yangon University, students, officials of UN organisations in Myanmar, personnel from Civil Society Organizations and invited guests.
Ms Renata Dessalien, resident coordinator of the UN, Myanmar office called on Myanmar Government and its people to wholeheartedly embrace the UN as their aligned organisation.
She said that the ceremony marking the 71st anniversary of the UN was born out of the cooperation between the UN and the Myanmar Government, pledging that the UN is ready to help Myanmar develop by sharing global experiences and knowledge.
Dr Pho Kaung, the rector of Yangon University, U Kyaw Zeya, the permanent secretary of the Foreign Ministry and the resident coordinator of the UN respectively discussed “Sustainable Aligned Cooperation between the UN and Myanmar” and “Role of Rule of Law for the Progress”.
There will be a meeting with the local populace of Shwe Pyi Tha Township, Yangon Region on October 21 as a campaign in commemoration of United Nations Day, it is learnt
Since April 1948, when Myanmar gained its Independence, it has been a UN member country. The UN is co-implementing many development projects with Myanmar governments in the activities of education, health, natural disasters, human rights, equality in rights between both sexes, human trafficking, elections and emergence of nationwide peace.
In Myanmar, there are over 2,000 staff members employed under the 17 UN organisations across the nation.
The UN is working with its 17 key objectives worldwide, to eradicate poverty and hunger, to be rich in nutritional food, to make progress in the agricultural sector, to ensure every individual’s health and education, for both sexes to have equal rights and for people to have an access to clean water and hygienic sewage systems. —Nandar Win
