9 October 2017 is 143th World Post Day and a ceremony was held in meeting hall of Ministry of Transport and Communications yesterday morning to commemorate the day. Union Minister for Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung attended the event and delivered an address.
The Union Minister said World Post Day events were held in 191 member countries including Myanmar annually and according to the statement of Universal Postal Union (UPU), 327.4 billion letters and 7.4 billion parcels were annually delivered by 5 million postal personnel.
The gigantic network of post offices is serving businesses and nationals and is seen as playing an important sector in the socio economic development of the countries said the Union Minister.
Next Directorate of Telecommunications Deputy Director Daw Ni Ni Han read a 2017 World Post Day message sent by Switzerland based UPU’s Director General and letter to international youth competition (local level) assessment group vice chairman U Zaw Win explained about assessment system for prize winners.
Afterwards letter to international youth competition for under 15(local level) winners were presented with prizes. Union Minister U Thant Sin Maung presented the first prize to Ma Win Pyae Pyae Zaw of State High School (1) Natmauk, Magway Regio, Deputy Minister U Kyaw Myo presented the second prize to Ma Ju Htat Zaw of State High School-Saipyin, Sagaing Region and Permanent Secretary U Chit Wai presented the third prize to Ma Nyein Thet Hnin of State High School 1 Mogok, Mandalay Region.
Directorate of Telecommunications Director General U Soe Thein then delivered a speech thanking the letter to international youth competition (local level) assessment group and presented commemorative gifts after which first prize winner Ma Win Pyae Pyae Zaw say words of thanks on behalf of the prize winners.
After this Myanma Post Office Managing Director U Kham Aung and officials presented prizes to responsible persons of best performing post offices of states and regions. World Post Day was celebrated each year to honour the creation of the Universal Postal Union and this year is the 143th it is learnt.—Myanmar News Agency
