Union Minister attends closing of 69th session of UNHCR’s Executive Committee

Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Win Myat Aye attended the closing of 69th session of UNHCR’s Executive Committee in Geneva, Switzerland, yesterday.
Representatives of 141countries attended the session held from 1 to 5 October.
In his speech at the closing ceremony, Union Minister Dr. Win Myat Aye briefed on consequences of the terrorist attacks in Rakhine State, returning to normalcy in the state, challenges for bringing about peaceful coexistence between the two different communities, works of the Union Enterprise for Humanitarian Assistance and Resettlement in Rakhine State, implementing recommendations on Rakhine State, works done in accordance with the agreement between Bangladesh and Myanmar, cooperation with UNDP and UNHCR, establishment of the Independent Commission of Enquiry and efforts for accepting the returnees with human dignity.
Besides, the Union Minister held talks with leaders of the delegations to the session over cooperation for rehabilitation in Myanmar.
He also held talks with Mr. Gilles Carbonnier, Vice-President of the International Committee of the Red Cross, at the head of the ICRC in Geneva.
At the meeting, Union Minister Dr. Win Myat Aye acknowledged the cooperation of the ICRC in Rakhine State through its Red Cross Movement after the terrorist attacks.
He also said that Myanmar is carrying out development works in Rakhine State in accordance with the policy of seeking solutions through negotiation and discussion leading to coexistence between different communities.
The Union Minister also stressed the importance of ensuring transparency in cooperation with local people and local social organizations to gain better results.
ICRC’s vice-president said he took pride in carrying out humanitarian activities in Myanmar, pledging that ICRC would continue its cooperation in giving aid to people not only in Rakhine but also in Kachin and Shan.
Mr. Gilles Carbonnier said ICRC would continue its efforts for reducing landmine incidents in Myanmar.
Union Minister Dr. Win Myat Aye also met with Mr. Antonio Vitorino, Director-General of the International Office for Migration-IOM on 4 October in Geneva and expressed thanks for IOM’s assistance for disaster reducing efforts and damage and loss assessment during and after disasters.
