Information and Public Relations Department-IPRD of the Ministry of Information and Daw Khin Kyi Foundation jointly opened a community centre and a mobile library in Thandwe yesterday.
Union Minister for Information Dr Pe Myint, Rakhine State Security and Border Affairs Minister Col Phone Tint, Rakhine State Social Affairs Minister Dr Chan Tha, Director-General of IPRD U Ye Naing and Dr Thant Thaw Kaung of the foundation formally opened the centre.
The Union Minister and party then sprinkled scented water on the signboard of the centre and the car to be used as the mobile library.
In his address, Union Minister Dr Pe Myint said the launching of the centres and mobile libraries is an IPRD program for the benefit of the community. Libraries at IPRD officers have been turned into the places that are actually useful and helpful for the community. Public libraries will become community libraries, and they will be supplied with all the necessary books. Mobile libraries will bring books to the communities. He said community centres invite all societies and they can be used for public, association and community meetings. Libraries host roundtable talks on literature for women. Community centres should be the places where negotiations, debates and talks on community development are held. They will also become centres to distribute facts and information in case a disaster occurs.
Minister Dr Chan Tha and Dr Thant Thaw Kaung gave speeches. A local spoke words of thanks.
Union Minister Dr Pe Myint and wife Daw Khaing Nwe Oo donated 200 books and one steel cupboard each for two high schools of the town.
Dr Chan Tha, on behalf of the Ministry of Health and Sports, presented sports gear for the two schools.
Then the Union Minister and party attended a roundtable discussion on literature in which writers gave talks.
They then visited the community centre. The community centre in Thandwe is the 13th such centres opened by the IPRD and the Daw Khin Kyi Foundation. —Aung Min Han
