Joint Irrigation Management meeting held in Nay Pyi Taw

Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr. Aung Thu attended the Joint Irrigation Management meeting held at Park Royal Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
In a speech delivered to the meeting Union Minister Dr. Aung Thu said that for Myanmar to transit from cultivating rice to cultivation of all types of crops, development and increasing the irrigation water distribution system plays an important role. Enthusiastic cooperation and participation of the farmers were required in extending the irrigation network and all are urged to strive toward following the law, rule and procedure on usage of irrigation water for the further development of irrigation system.
Following the speech the meeting was held and relevant experts conduct sector wise discussions.
Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation had drawn up an agriculture development strategy for the development of irrigation systems and irrigation water management, effective usage of irrigation works, maintaining and reconstruction of basic infrastructure, mitigating flooding and inundation, priority accorded to prevention of salt water intrusion through maintaining embankments and dams. Upgrading of dams and irrigation systems of South Nawin, North Nawin, Wegyi and Taungnyo dams in western part of Bago Region and upgrading of Thapanseik Dam irrigation system were being conducted in cooperation with JICA.
Based on the outcome of the day’s meeting maintenance of basic infrastructure, work of sharing irrigation water and extension works of present irrigation system will be conducted in cooperation between officials from Irrigation and Water Utilisation Management Department, local and foreign experts, development partner organisations and water user management groups in the project regions.
