As part of the National Electrification Project, the Mandalay Technology Company, the Republic of Korea-based ELT Co. Ltd, and MTES Company (Myanmar) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for Renewable Energy Development in Myanmar on Tuesday at the Sedona Hotel in Yangon.
The MoU is aimed at generating renewable energy in Mon State, and Ayeyawady, Magway, Mandalay, and Taninthayi regions.
U Win Khaing Moe, Director-General, Department of Research and Innovation, Ministry of Education, said about 45-50 per cent of Myanmar’s total population has access to electricity.
Myanmar has set a target of electrifying 100 per cent households by 2030. According to the National Electricity Master Plan, the country’s electricity deficiency is expected to reach 4,531 megawatts by 2020 and 14,542 megawatts by 2030. In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, Myanmar produced 3,221 MW of electricity from hydro power, 1,967 MW from natural gas, 120 MW from coal, and 101 MW from diesel.
However, only 40 per cent of the target was produced from hydro power in the summer.
Renewable energy projects utilizing bio-mass and hydropower are also being implemented to electrify rural areas, which do not have access to the national grid.
U Zaw Naing, the Managing Director of Mandalay Technology Company, U Aung Lay Nwe, in-charge of NLD Education Network, and Dr. Khin Maung Lwin, BOD member of Green Economy Green Growth presented their remarks at the MoU signing ceremony. Afterwards, U Zaw Naing, U Okkar, the Managing Director of MTES (Myanmar), and Mr. Yan Hee Won, the Chairman of ELT Co. Ltd, signed the MoU for Renewable Energy Development in Myanmar.
