A workshop on the Development of a Strategic Plan for the Country’s Supply Chain was held at the Horizon Lake View Hotel in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning.
Speaking at the workshop, the Union Minister for Health and Sports, Dr. Myint Htwe, said managing the supply chain efficiently is important for both the nation and the Ministry. He said the workshop would review the current system from a professional standpoint and management perspective in order to support it and designate practical tasks.
The Union Minister said future tasks must be planned according to the situation detailed by the 2014 national report on the country’s supply chain. He said these tasks must be carried out according to the funds and human resources available.
“The Ministry has formed a Procurement and Distribution Division, headed by an official of the Deputy Director-General rank. The division reviews the annual consumption of pharmaceuticals, estimates the quota of pharmaceuticals and apparatuses to be purchased, their procurement, storage, and distribution, and evaluates their use,” said the Union Minister.
Before the workshop, two preliminary coordination meetings were held to evaluate the projects and strategies related to the national supply chain, in order to produce practical solutions that can be implemented, he said.
The Union Minister said the workshop will conduct discussions on the fundamental principles of the supply chain, including systematic procurement, storage, managing expired products and waste, estimating needs, and implementing an information exchange system.
He said the success of these tasks depends on the region/state level Public Health Department and Medical Services Department’s heads and Medical Superintendents. He urged them to implement these tasks with the same care as their own personal matters.
The Union Minister said support from the USAID Global Supply Chain Program is needed to launch diploma courses in supply chain management as quickly as possible. He urged participants at the workshop to put forth their ideas and suggestions for the emergence of a national supply chain system that will have immense benefits.
Afterwards, the Deputy Director-General (Procurement and Distribution) explained the workshop’s objectives. The Country Director of the Global Health Supply Chain Program – Procurement and Supply Management (GHSC-PSM) explained the continued support necessary for designing practical strategies,and Consultant Mr. Pierre de Vasson explained the tasks for strengthening the supply chain and the importance of management. —MNA (Translated by Zaw Htet Oo)
