The high-level meeting of the Partnership Group for Peace, Development and Democracy in Myanmar (PGM) was held yesterday morning at the UN Headquarters in New York with the opening address by United Nations Secretary-General Mr Ban Ki-moon.
Speaking at PGM meeting, the UNSG said that good results are being seen in effectuation of the democratic system in Myanmar, that the overwhelming votes for NLD during the election have shown that the new government has won the trust of the people, that the decision of the people reflects their recognition of NLD’s sacrificing spirit in the recent years, that his attendance at 21st Century Pang Long held at Nay Pyi Taw in August was aimed at UN’s laying of emphasis upon Myanmar’s national reconciliation process and that as there is the political progress in Myanmar, it is the time now to consider ending PGM.
Next, explaining that (latest) developments in Myanmar, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs U Kyaw Tin said that he
thanked the UN for providing sustained support for Myanmar’s
democratization process, that the government is being faced with challenges to realize the aspirations of both its own people and the international community, that the 21st Century Pang Long Conference based on the Union Spirit was held successfully with all-inclusiveness, that this conference is an important, first step towards achievement of national reconciliation and eternal peace, that the government has been resolved to bringing about reconciliation, peace and prosperity concerning Rakhine State, that now is the time for us to be given a chance to positively and actively participate with the UN like other nations by having a normal relation, that as there are (political) developments in Myanmar, it is no longer necessary for UN to keep mechanisms to watch and monitor Myanmar and that it is the time now to end the UNSG’s service sector inclusive of the mandate granted to the special adviser and the bill regarding human rights in Myanmar.
Afterwards, representatives from 15 members of PGM present at the meeting discussed in support of ending PGM founded to discuss Myanmar affairs. EU’s foreign policy chief said that EU would not table a human rights resolution on Myanmar to the UNGA.
PGM was formed with Australia, India, Indonesia, China, European Union, France, Japan, Norway, Singapore, Thai, Britain, America, Russia and Viet Nam.
