Out of 18 five-storey buildings planned for workers in the Shwe Linban Industrial Zone, 16 have been completed, according to the chairman of the industrial zone committee.
Construction of the building started in 2015. Apartments will be sold to through an instalment payment system.
U Aue Thaung said that all the apartments in the housing complex for workers, over 1,000 flats, have been sold even before their construction was complete.
“Sixteen apartment buildings have been completed and foundations have been laid for the remaining two,” he added.
The remaining apartment buildings will be completed before the next rainy season.
Only factory owners have been allowed to buy the apartments, which are worth between Ks6 million to Ks9 million, to accommodate their workers. Buyers included garment factory owners and other factory owners including foreigners, who are not permitted to buy apartments in their names but manage to buy apartments in other people’s names, according to the chairman of the industrial zone committee. A tax-free wet market and a clinic are also included in the project.
