There have been no reported deaths in Myanmar as a result of Cyclone Mora, the storm that swept through the western coast on Tuesday, but 4,702 houses were destroyed and 13,595 homes were damaged in Rakhine State, Chin State and Ayeyawady Region, according to a statement released Friday from the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
The report said that 325 schools, 32 office buildings and 57 religious buildings were also destroyed, while 429 non-residential buildings were damaged. Twenty-three hospitals and clinics, 23 government buildings, three bridges, 38 utility poles and 22 motorboats were also damaged by the cyclone, the ministry said.
The most damage and destruction occurred in Maungtaw, in northwest Rakhine State, the ministry said.
The storm began in the Bay of Bengal, then gained strength and headed north, making landfall in Bangladesh and brushing by the western coast of Myanmar, bringing with it high winds and heavy rain and leaving a trail of destruction.
Bangladesh suffered a direct hit from the cyclone, causing at least three deaths as the storm flattened coastal villages and refugee camps. More than 500,000 people were displaced as a result of the storm, it was reported.
Police in Bangladesh said a woman and a man were crushed under trees fallen by strong winds in Cox’s Bazar.
Another woman died of panic, officials said, adding that several thousand houses were damaged in the area, most of them huts constructed out of mud.
