At the Fifth Annual Union Level Multi-Stakeholder Review for the Myanmar National Community Driven Development (MNCDD) Project held at Myanmar International Convention Centre-II (MICC-II) in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning Union Minister for Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Dr. Aung Thu said urban development only is not enough in the country-wide development, as development of rural areas, where 70 per cent of population live, is the most important requirement.
The Union Minister continued and said that as an agriculture country, rural regions form the backbone of Myanmar’s development and as long as the backbone is straight and strong, the country will develop in an increasing momentum. That is why priority is given toward agriculture sector development with an aim for socio-economic development of the rural populace and basic infrastructure, mainly required for socio-economic development, is being established, said the Union Minister.
Transportation and access to electricity are the most required basic infrastructure, while it is the priority requirement of rural regions. Therefore, relevant departments are fulfilling these requirements, while rural populace themselves are supporting and participating with people-centered project. People-centered projects also fulfill the country’s economic policy aim of “achieving sustainable development through people-centered participation of all.” In the project villages, required basic social infrastructures are selected, implemented, managed and ownership taken by the people themselves from start to finish.
Union level multi-stakeholder reviews were conducted yearly since the project was started. Year by year, implementation improves with experience gained, lessons learnt and challenges overcome from the reviews. To this year, 21,122 project sub-works were implemented in 12,011 villages with full quality and much benefit to the people. The outcomes from these implementations are the fruits of development being obtained by 7.1 million rural households.
As the effectiveness of these reviews was proven by the experience gained from past reviews, discussions are urged to be made in a constructive way for the success of the project and to benefit the people more.
Next World Bank Program Leader Mr. Mark Austin delivered a speech and Department of Rural Development Director-General U Khant Zaw explained briefly about people-centered project.
Afterwards, the Union Minister and officials presented awards to village tracts for their performances in the fifth year of the project and observed the photo records of the project works.
Attendees of the review then conducted discussions under various themes. After these discussions, the attendees were divided into groups and conducted group discussions. —MNA
