The International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Myanmar Government held a coordination meeting of High Level Working Group (HLWG) on Cooperation of Labour Affairs to finalize discussions on Good Practice Guidelines for Preventing Forced Labour at the Ministry of Labour, Immigration and Population in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday.
The good practice guidelines are part of the action plan for the elimination of forced labour signed between the ILO and the Myanmar Government.
Attending the meeting were Union Minister for Labour, Immigration and Population U Thein Swe, HLWG members comprising of permanent secretaries, directors-general and officials from government ministries, ILO’s Liaison Officer Mr. Rory Mungoven, and other officials.
In his speech delivered at the meeting, the Union Minister first mentioned that the meeting they were at now was to approve of the curriculum and schedule for the training of trainers (ToT) and other training courses, to finalize discussions on the Good Practice Guidelines for Preventing Forced Labour, and to discuss implementation of a national complaint mechanism for elimination of forced labour.
The good practice guidelines were sent by the ILO as a follow-up to the 23 May HLWG meeting which focused on a compilation of Do’s and Don’ts and training course schedules, said the Union Minister.
He said increasing the capacity of technical working group members and providing ToT courses to government officials and Tatmadaw officers will spread the elimination of forced labour through all levels of management, in addition to conducting seminars and trainings in the states and regions as part of priority 3 of the action plan.
The Union Minister said there needs to be cooperation with ILO to review and select government officials and Tatmadaw officers as participants to the ToT course.
He said a workshop is slated to be held in December to garner experience from other countries in setting up a national complaint mechanism to replace the existing complaint mechanism which will reach the end of its course on December this year.
The meeting commenced afterwards and the attendees discussed the good practice guidelines and the training schedules. —MNA
