APAC Judicial Conf. on Environmental and Climate Change Adjudication begins

Union Chief Justice U Htun Htun Oo attended and addressed the opening ceremony of the Asia-Pacific Judicial Conference on Environmental and Climate Change Adjudication held at the Hilton Hotel, in Nay Pyi Taw yesterday morning. The conference was jointly organized by the Union Supreme Court, Asian Development Bank (ADB), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Asian Judges Network on Environment (AJNE).
The conference is held with the aim of strengthening in trying cases related to the natural environment and climate change. It is also aimed for judges and legal experts to discuss widely on cooperating among Asia-Pacific countries for fairness in maintaining the natural environment, hearing and judging natural environment cases, and strengthening the need to follow precedence and best practices in the area of environmental management.
The conference will be held for two days on 29 and 30 October and challenges related to environment and climate change, enacted laws on protection and maintaining of the environment, implementation of the laws, trials relating to environment and climate change and challenges and the role of judges in the era of climate change will be discussed by people participating in wide ranging sectors from different views and angles.
The conference is attended by Chief Judges, judges, judicial officers and high ranking officials from ASEAN countries, South Asia countries, Pacific region countries, Britain, Australia, United States of America, Brazil, New Zealand and Kiribati; officials from ADB and UN Environment Programme; experts from Train-the-Trainers Program Environmental Champion; legal experts; Constitutional Tribunal of Myanmar Chairman; Union Minister; Union Supreme Court judges; Pyidaungsu Hluttaw, Pyithu Hluttaw and Amyotha Hluttaw commissions and affairs committees chairmen, secretaries and members; officials from Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation; professors from legal departments of Yangon and Mandalay Universities; chairmen of Yangon and Mandalay bar associations; district level judges; judicial officers from Union Supreme Court and media personnel. The conference was hosted by Myanmar. — MNA
