Union Minister for Transport and Communications U Thant Sin Maung accompanied by Chin State Chief Minister Salai Lian Luai arrived at Falam Airport construction project office on 17 November where Department of Civil Aviation Director U Kyaw Soe explained about the project in detail covering the aim of the project; site selection; restrictions related to air traffic; design based on International Air Transport Association terms and condition on safe landings of aircrafts; construction works including retaining walls, apron, runway, terminal, control tower; connecting electrical cables for lighting; water drains; project cost and project processes.
In response to the explanation, the Union Minister and the Chief Minister remarked on completing the construction on schedule and up to set standards; to conduct works without worksite incidents and accidents; resubmit a more modern design for the terminal building among others and resubmit the budget requirement.
Next the Union Minister and the Chief Minister inspected the airport construction project works.
Falam Airport is situated in the middle of Chin State and towns such as Falam, Haka, Thantlang and Tiddim can reach all airports in states and regions via this airport named Surbung. Once this airport is completed it will become the air Gateway of Chin State and will enable visitors to reach Chin State in a short travel time.
The project was started in 2013 and construction began in 2015. Falam Airport is situated on Surbung mountain range 8.5 miles northwest of Falam Town and is at an altitude of 6,000 ft. above sea level. The airport runway is 6,000 ft long and 100 ft wide and is a Flexible Pavement type runway.
The permitted load of the runway is 50,000 pounds and the airport is constructed with a budget of Ks 28 billion. It is now over 40 percent completed and the first phase will be completed in 2021 when planes can start landing it is learnt. —MNA (Translated by Zaw Min)
